Dickcissel at Primm, September 23, 2015

A brief stop at the Primm Forest Preserve led to yet another payout at a spot that’s quickly gaining a reputation as the loosest bird slot machine in Nevada.

This non-breeding female Dickcissel was found in the wet, grassy ditch behind the shopping outlets building. When last seen, it was foraging with Savannah, Lincoln’s, Chipping, and Brewer’s Sparrows as well as some Lazuli Buntings. I was able to pick it out by its larger overall size compared to all the other birds as well as its long-shaped head (maybe due to the long supercilium). Good luck and good birding!
