A Shebang of Shearwaters

Last week, as a possible result of El Niño conditions in the Pacific Ocean, massive schools of anchovies appeared off the coast of San Diego. Seabirds followed. South of San Diego, on islands off the west coast of Baja, gigantic colonies of Black-vented Shearwaters nest in the summer. The opportunity to feast on the incredible schools of anchovies proved an irresistible draw for the birds, and thousands were reportedly streaming up the coast. I spent a couple of days going out in search of the massive Black-vented Shearwater shebangs, as well as frenzied flocks of terns and other assorted oceanic birds.
