Townsend’s Solitaire – Bow, NH – January 1, 2011

Moments ago, I was able to photograph a Townsend’s Solitaire in Bow, NH!!!

Having spent New Year’s with some friends in Bow, several of us were excited to get an early start on our 2011 lists this morning. The midnight Barred Owl story will have to wait though!

Around 9:00 am, a bird flew into some distant treetops and initially suggested Townsend’s Solitaire, a bird that Anne and I last saw in Utah. Having a very distant and brief look before it flew off, we convinced ourselves that we had seen a Northern Mockingbird and forgot about it for a while. Thankfully it returned and we got to see it again, hear it making its homing-beacon call, and we even managed some photos!

Anybody interested in seeing the bird might get a view of it by driving up to Sterling Place in Bow. The bird has been flying from treetop to treetop and crossing the street frequently.

Good birding!

For anybody looking for updates – it is now Sunday morning, 8 am, and I have seen the bird in several treetops. There are also at least three cars full of birders outside on the street and they look quite excited!

Good luck if you come out…
